Feb. 15, 2018

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Local, county, and campus police officers worked together on the afternoon of Thursday, Feb. 15 to apprehend a police suspect.

A suspect in an incident that occurred in Fairfield, Ala. entered the Birmingham-Southern College campus on foot Birmingham-Southern College property on Thursday afternoon while fleeing a traffic stop. BSC Campus Police quickly detained the individual in support of Birmingham City Police and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers from all three jurisdictions, including the Sheriff’s K9 unit, then conducted an extensive search to confirm that an additional suspect believed to be at-large was not on the campus. At 3:15 p.m., the college sent a text message asking students, staff, and faculty to remain in place; at 3:57 p.m., an additional order was issued to students, staff, and faculty to shelter in place to ensure their safety. BSC police officers also checked door-to-door in the Hilltop Village Apartments, which are in the area where the first suspect was apprehended, to ensure that all students were safe and accounted for.

At 5:04 p.m., college officials issued an “all clear.”

The campus has now resumed normal operations.
